CYCLING TOUR IN ANCIENT PATH

Starting point: Ancient theater of Epidaurus

Distance : 15 km

Visit period: All year

Ending point: “BIO GARDEN of OLIVE TREES” of “MELAS OLIVE OIL DOMAIN – GAEA OF EPIDAURUS”

Brief description: Our tour starts in front of the ancient theater of Epidaurus with the direction to Ligourio. We cycle 5 km through olive fields in a dirt path and then 1km downhill to the main asphalt road. After 10min we meet in our left side the preserved path. It welcomes us an inscription of the 3rd century BC, that exact copy has been hacked at the entrance of the reconstructed area and says to us :

“This pathway traveler will leads you to the sanctuary of the God of healing”

Τhis ancient path has total length 1800m and you cycle through pine trees and you see ancient Herms & the preserved imprints of chariot lanes (armatrochies). Continue on, we cycle 6 km to provincial road with small ascent through olive fields. During to those 6 km we see mysterious ruins, with a small shortcut we see watermill & byzantine church. When we reach the Ligourio village we can visit the pyramid with panoramic view of the surrounding area.

Our tour ends at the”BIO GARDEN of OLIVE TREES ”, the local olive oil company with Olive tasting and mini buffet , offering a few hours of relaxation , but knowledge too . .

WALKING TOUR IN ANCIENT PATH

Brief description: Our tour starts in front of the ancient theater of Epidaurus with the direction to Ligourio. We walk through vegetation and pine trees and with the voice of stream and birds to accompany us. In a few minutes we approach the river bed which in winter, autumn and spring time we will find water.Continue on the path goes uphill and we will see within the path the two ancient Herms & the preserved imprints of chariot lanes (armatrochies). At the end of this preserved path will find a small picturesque chapel where ‘Pausanias has a story to tell us’.

We will walk totally 1.800 m at the today’s survival ancient path which connected the sanctuary of ancient Epidaurus with the port of Epidaurus and also it was the only one ancient Mycenean path which connected the argolic towns with the ancient port of Kechries of Saronic gulf. Our tour ends at the”BIO GARDEN of OLIVE TREES ”, the local olive oil company with Olive tasting and mini buffet , offering a few hours of relaxation, but knowledge too .

MYCENAE OR PROSIMNI

Starting point: Mycenae or Prosimni

Distance : 11 km

Level: Medium

Ways of crossing: Οn foot or by bicycle

Hot spots: Acropolis of Mycenae, walking the same ancient path that the King of Agamemnon walked, Hellenistic tower, Roman baths, vaulted Mycenaean tomb.

This route follows the traces of an ancient road that connected Mycenaean citadel of Mycenae with the basin of Prosimni, which is passed the shortest route (Kontoporeia) connecting Argos city with Korinthos

ΤΟWER

This tower dates from the 3rd century BC and oversaw the settlement either in the south or the Kontoporeia tract. Subsequently used for the production and storage of agricultural products.It destroyed by fire in the early 7th century AD.

ROMAN BATHS

The baths were probably part of a comprehensive rural villa with smithy, mill and possibly a place of worship, on which is built the adjacent small church of St. John . It’s worth a visit the church as it is almost underground .Υou can find there a marquetry .Near the church there is a large stone, probably a remnant of the mill.

ΗΙLL OF MASTOS

In the Mastos area have found traces of habitation since the Neolithic era. The settlement flourished during the late Greek period and appears to follow the decline of Mycenae after the Dorian invasion. Archaeological findings from the area are exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Nafplion.

MYCENAE-ANCIENT HRAIO

Starting point: Mycenae

Level: Easy

Distance: 6 km one way, 12 km circlular route

Hot spots: Hidden Mycenean bridge, base of ancient guard room, walking through olive fields, majestic panoramic view of argolic gulf & of argolic plain, hidden Mycenean vaulted tomb, picturesque small chappels, the sacramental beauty of the archaeological site of ancient Heraio.
